| The St. Patrick's Day Parade
Association of Lackawanna County, Inc. will begin honoring veterans this year with an
annual award established by a $1,000 donation from the Quiet Man Society. The Michael F. King Jr. Award will be given by the association in conjunction with the its annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. The 39th annual edition is scheduled to step off March 11 at 11:30 a.m. "We plan to start with World War II and Korean veterans and then work our way through wars," said Bill King, association president. "I want to thank the Quiet Men for endowing this award." "We were looking for a way to honor Mike King for his years of work as a Quiet Man," society President Brian Nixon said. "We decided a parade award would be the perfect way since he enjoyed participating every year." Mr. King said plans are progressing for the March 11 parade, but there is still a need for sponsors and room for participants. The association can be contacted through the association's web page (www.stpatparade.com.) or by writing to Post Office Box 374, Scranton 18501. He said the association will be selling a limited edition of T-shirts commemorating its 2000 parade to help defray expenses. Gene Hallinan, committee chairman, will be announcing details shortly. John Brazil, chairman of the band committee, said the Wyoming Valley West and Pittston Area bands will march this year. Bagpipe groups will include the Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band and the Nittany Highland Pipe Band from State College. |
