Philly Runners To Bolster Parade Race |
| A group of 90 runners from the
Philadelphia Area is expected to make this year's St. Patrick's Parade 5K foot race the
largest in history. The race will precede by minutes the start of Scranton's 39th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade which is scheduled to step off March 11 at 11:30 a.m. "The addition of the Philadelphia contingent means that this year's race should have more than 300 participants," said Al O'Donnell Jr., the chairman of the event for the St. Patrick's Day Parade Association of Lackawanna County, Inc. Mr. O'Donnell, who is assisted by Tom Halpin and Sean Hanlon, said applications have been distributed to running and athletic stores. They can also be obtained through the association's Web page (stpatparade.com.) or by writing to Post Office Box 374, Scranton 18501. Association President William King said arrangements for the parade itself are well under way, although the group remains considerably short of the $25,000 it needs to meet expenses. He asked anyone who wants to become a $2,500 corporate sponsor, $600 division sponsor or $150 VIP sponsor to contact the association through its Web page, the post office or any member. The same avenues can be used by any group which wants to participate in the parade, Mr. King said. The parade will again be broadcast by WOLF-TV starting at noon on March 11. |
