Americans Skate Around Penguins

With the unbalanced schedule the American Hockey League employs, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Rochester Americans will not meet again for the rest of the season. After watching his club lose to the Amerks, 4-3, Saturday night, Penguins coach Glenn Patrick doesn't mind that at all.

Some-times a 6-for-6 night on the penalty kill can be an insignificant stat, nothing more than a nice conversation piece on the bus ride home. Other times, like in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 2-2 tie with the Rochester Americans on Friday night, it can be the difference in a hockey game

   HERSHEY -- After watching goalie Joel Laing stop 41 of 43 shots as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated the Hershey Bears, 4-2, Wednesday night, Penguins coach Glenn Patrick was speaking in tongues.

   There's good news from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins locker room on the condition of defenseman Brendan Buckley, who was taken off the ice on a stretcher during Friday night's game at the First Union Arena.

Penguins meet Bears tonight

   The Bears and Penguins will meet again Tuesday at First Union Arena and Wednesday at Hersheypark Arena. Following an away-and-home set Dec. 29-30 with the Rochester Americans, the Penguins will travel to Albany Jan. 3 and Philadelphia Jan. 5.

Melichar at a loss

   Josef Melichar, the rugged 21-year-old Czech defenseman, was the only player to appear in all 80 games during the Penguins' inaugural season. The team won just 23 games.

Norfolk Beats Penguins, 3-1

   Reto Von Arx's shorthanded goal early in the third period broke a tie score and enabled the Norfolk Admirals to defeat the Penguins, 3-1, Saturday night before a crowd of 8,340 at First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.

   Usually when a team is on a losing streak, it wants to get right back out there and try to get back on the winning track.

   LEXINGTON, Ky. -- At least the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins do not have to visit Rupp Arena again during the regular season.

Tibbetts, Crozier latest bound for NHL

   WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP -- Two black equipment bags -- one belonging to Billy Tibbetts, the other to Greg Crozier -- sat in the middle of an empty Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins locker room Wednesday morning. Several hockey sticks, bound together with tape, lay on top of each bag.

Pens take advantage of favorable schedule

   Back on Oct. 21, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were coming off consecutive losses in Canada to Saint John and Quebec and preparing to play the Syracuse Crunch. The game marked the beginning of a stretch that would see the Penguins play 14 of their next 20 games at home.
