Twenty-six years ago today — Dec. 19, 1974 — the Boston Bruins score three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 55 seconds en route to an 11-3 victory over the New York Rangers.

Bobby Schmautz started the Bruins’ spree with a goal at 19:13 of the first pe­riod. Ken Hodge then scored 18 seconds into the second period, followed by Phil Esposito (:43), Don Marcotte (:58) and John Bucyk (2:08).

The outburst is only the third fastest in NHL history. The Pittsburgh Penguins set the record Nov. 22, 1972, with five goals in 2:07 of the third period of a 10-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Bryan Hextall (12:00), Jean Pronovost (12:18), Al McDonough (13:40), Ken Schinkel (13:49) and Ron Schock (14:07) scored for the Penguins.

The New York Islanders scored five goals in a 2:37 span of the first period Jan. 26, 1982, against Pittsburgh. Duane Sutter and Bryan Trottier each had two goals in the outburst. John Tonelli also scored.
