To report "Making of a Family," Jessica D.
Matthews spent hundreds of hours over more than 16 months
with the Cummings, attending school at Old Forge with Wendy,
observing Mike at work at Lackawanna County Stadium,
reviewing documents, talking with their doctors, adoption
lawyers and advisers, and family and friends.
She was there for their most important decisions in
their search for a family. She capped off the reporting by
traveling with the couple when they got their son, Andrew
Michael, from his orphanage in Lang Son, a province in
northern Vietnam, just 10 miles from the China border. She
attended the special international adoption ceremony with
them and then traveled south to Ho Chi Minh City where they
finalized the adoption.
As a result, relatively few scenes in the
"Making of a Family" are reconstructed, and those
are the result of careful interviews with all key
participants.
