GETTING YOUR NEWS IN  THE SCRANTON TIMES-TRIBUNE

We appreciate telephone calls with news tips or for other urgent matters, such as correcting information in a news story or in a yet-to-be-published press release. But in most cases the BEST way to communicate with us is in writing.

Your news release should be typed, double- or triple-spaced on one side of 8.5x11-inch paper. It should include:
* Time, date and place of any event and why you think it is news.
* Names and addresses of people involved.
* Reservation deadlines, telephone number, for further information and ticket prices if applicable.
* A name and phone number of someone we can talk to for information.

Photos may be included with a release.
* All photographs submitted become the property of The Scranton Times-Tribune and cannot be returned.
* All correspondence should be marked to the attention of the appropriate department and mailed to: The Scranton Times-Tribune, 149 Penn Ave., Scranton, Pa. 18503
* Releases also may be sent via e-mail to either an individual news reporter or the general newsroom mailbox, citydesk@timesshamrock.com

BUSINESS

There are several ways to get information about your business or company in the newspaper. Your best guide on writing it is to see what we publish and follow the format.
Details on promotions, reassignments and new officers are published in BusinessWeekly's Sunday "People on the move" listing. Send us the name of the person, town of residence, company and new position.

Items covering company and industry awards, public forums, large donations, new businesses and relocations, and workshops and seminars are published in BusinessWeekly's Sunday "Business briefcase" listing. Send us a short rundown covering the specifics of your item.

A short profile of a business-related person of interest appears weekly. Let us know if you have an idea for someone we should include in the question-and-answer format.

"In this corner" offers readers an opportunity to offer their opinions about a subject of general interest to the area business community. The column runs about 650 words. It's best to check with the business editor before you write.

Mail information in care of the Business Editor, The Scranton Times-Tribune, 149 Penn Ave., Scranton, Pa. 18503, or e-mail to businessweekly@timesshamrock.com.
Fax the newsroom at 348-9135

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Athlete of the Week
The newspapers launched a special feature in 1950 honoring area athletes. The long-running program, co-sponsored by ESPN radio, honors a scholastic or collegiate athlete playing in the area each Monday during the school year.

Athletes are selected by a panel of the Times-Tribune sports staff based on the achievements during the previous week.

The Athlete of the Week is featured in a special profile that runs along with Around the Schools in the Monday sports section during the school year. The Athlete of the Week also appears Monday on "In the Zone" with Joby Fawcett between 5 and 6 p.m. on ESPN radio, 630- and 1240-AM.

Lynett Memorial Basketball Tournament
The newspapers sponsor what is commonly referred to as "the granddaddy" of high school basketball tournaments each year during the Christmas season. The Lynett Memorial Basketball Tournament tipped off in 1951 and has been a staple of the holiday sports menu since.

The tournament now features four boys teams and four girls teams.

The newspapers also select a champion in a cheerleading competition.

A special newspaper supplement appears the Sunday before the tournament begins and focuses on the history of the tournament as well as participating teams.

Northeast Woman
The newspapers launched a special "Northeast Woman" feature on Nov. 22, 1981. Each Sunday since, the paper has profiled a regional woman who has made notable and significant contributions to the community. A full feature appears each week on Page 3 of the People Section (F).

The publishers of the newspapers host a special luncheon each January honoring the Northeast Women.

Scholastic Superstars
The Times-Tribune sponsors several special programs designed to highlight superior achievement in the community.

With input from school administrators from throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and a panel of independent judges, the newspapers name a Scholastic Superstars team each May. The team is composed of the best and brightest area students and is honored each year with a special newspaper section as well as a banquet.
