Barrasse Had Deal For Eagen

HARRISBURG -- Lackawanna County District Attorney Michael Barrasse testified Friday he told former Judge Frank Eagen on April 3, 1997, he would not prosecute him on criminal charges if he would resign and publicly admit wrongdoing in his handling of estates.

That prompted attorney William Costopoulos, Mr. Eagen's counsel, to ask why Mr. Barrasse would let a judge he believed had taken bribes off with such a light penalty.

Mr. Barrasse replied that Phillip Bosha, Mr. Eagen's accuser who previously had pleaded guilty to stealing from estates he had been appointed to guard, was not a strong witness.

The exchange underlined the defense's contention that Mr. Eagen was prosecuted out of office, which he lost in an election after being deluged with negative publicity, so Mr. Barrasse could run
